More recently we have seen growing research activities in Optical Wireless Communications (OWC) as a complementary wireless communications technology to the more established radio frequency-based systems such as cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in order to overcome the spectrum crunch and provide high data rates in urban environment and crowded locations. The OWC technology offering advantages such as free license, wide bandwidth, inherent security, and no radio-frequency-based interference, which makes it very attractive for the emerging 5G wireless communications. Nevertheless, the widespread deployment of optical wireless systems, namely infrared, ultraviolet, and visible light communications (VLC), will face a number of challenged including the weather effects (mostly outdoor), eye and skin safety regulations, compatibility with existing networks, mobility (mostly in outdoor environment), and device/system performance. This has led to a substantial volume of research activities both at academia and industry at a global level to address the challenges and make OWC system a more reliable and viable wireless option. The 8th workshop on OWC cordially invites researchers to share latest research and innovations in OWC technologies, as well as their applications, including theory and practice in the design of OWC-based systems.
The workshop plans to focus on short to medium range optical wireless communications, from indoor to outdoor, from atmosphere to ground and underwater.
Topics of interest include, but are NOT limited to:
- Indoor and outdoor optical wireless channel and network modeling
- Visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet communications
- Modulation and coding techniques for OWC
- Signal processing for OWC
- Information theory and capacity of OW channels
- MIMO and OFDM techniques for OWC
- Multiple access, scheduling, and interference coordination
- Resource allocation and energy efficiency in OWC
- Topology control and routing for free space optical (FSO) networks
- Airborne FSO systems (e.g., UAV, aircraft, satellite)
- Atmospheric effects on the performance of FSO links
- Long wavelength FSO communications
- Mobility management and resource allocation for VLC networks
- Multihop OWC
- Hybrid OW/RF communication systems and integration with the 5G
- Optical camera communication
- OW sensor networks
- OWC-based system for positioning
- Vehicular OWC
- Underwater OWC systems
- Quantum communication over optical wireless links
- OWC in medical applications
IEEE OWC Workshop accepts only novel, previously unpublished papers in the area of optical wireless communications. Prospective authors are encouraged to submit a 6-page IEEE conference style paper (including all text, figures, and references) through EDAS submission system.
The workshop type is configured as “Track” under “GC’18 Workshop” at EDAS.
(If you have any problems during submission, please contact: hranilovic (at) mcmaster (dot) ca)
Accepted papers must be presented at the workshop by one of the authors. The presenter must register for the workshop before the deadline for author registration. Failure to register before the deadline will result in automatic withdrawal of the paper from the workshop proceedings and the program. All papers selected for publication will be published together with IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 proceedings and available on IEEE Xplore database.
Paper Submission: 1 July 2018
Paper Notification: 30 August 2018
Camera-Ready Paper: 15 September 2018
AUTHOR AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Important IEEE Policy Announcement: The IEEE reserves the right to exclude a paper from distribution after the conference (including its removal from IEEE Explore) if the paper is not presented at the conference.
Papers are reviewed on the basis that they do not contain plagiarized material and have not been submitted to any other conference at the same time (double submission). These matters are taken very seriously and the IEEE Communications society will take action against any author who engages in either practice. Follow these links to learn more:

PLEASE NOTE: To be published in the IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 Conference Proceedings and to be eligible for publication in IEEE Xplore®, an author of an accepted paper is required to register for the workshop and the paper must be presented by an author of that paper at the conference unless the TPC Chair grants permission for a substitute presenter in advance of the event and who is qualified both to present and answer questions. Non-refundable registration fees must be paid prior to uploading the final IEEE formatted, publication-ready version of the paper. Accepted and presented papers will be published in the IEEE GLOBECOM 2018 Conference Proceedings and submitted to IEEE Xplore®.
During the initial paper submission process via EDAS, it is the authors' responsibility to ensure that the author list and the paper title of the submitted pdf file is an exact match to the author list and paper title on the EDAS registration page. In particular, the EDAS registration page must include all co-authors, not just the submitting author. Failure to comply with this rule might result in your paper being withdrawn from the review process. Please be aware that the author list of an accepted paper can NOT be changed in the final manuscript.
All final submissions should be written in English with a maximum paper length of six (6) printed pages (10-point font) including figures without incurring additional page charges (maximum 1 additional page with over length page charge of USD100 if accepted). Papers exceeding 7 pages will not be accepted at EDAS.
Standard IEEE conference templates for LaTeX formats are found at here:http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html
You may also use one of the following templates for Microsoft Word: A4, US letter. Only PDF files will be accepted for the review process, and all submissions must be done through EDAS.
If you have any questions regarding the submission of manuscripts, please contact one of the organizers.
